All foster carers are paid an allowance to cover the cost of caring for a child or young person. Currently, this ranges from £412 to £690 per week – but it all depends on the age of the child and the level of complexity of the fostering task.

The allowance is to cover the day to day cost of caring for a child including food, toiletries, nappies, clothing, school equipment, leisure activities, pocket money, and transport, as well as a contribution towards household bills. Additional payments may be made in some circumstances.

All foster carers receive payments into their bank account fortnightly in arrears. In most cases, fostering allowances are tax-free due to the HMRC “foster carers tax exemption scheme”.
